Sandy Balls goes viral

From the heart of the New Forest National Park to global recognition, Sandy Balls Holiday Centre has seen its TV ad rocket to fame appearing on Have I Got News For You, prime time American TV and Radio One’s Early Morning Show. Also notching up a staggering 221,323 hits (and counting) on YouTube, the Sandy Balls ad has been the source of amusement across the world with the holiday centre’s unusual name turning the ad into a video viral. It was the United States who were first to spot the video’s humour with two network programmes including the Ellen Degeneres Show, with its 5 million viewers, showing the ad in full. Then came the request from the BBC to feature the ad on Have I Got News For You which attracts more than 6 million viewers for every programme before Dev from Radio One ran it live on his early morning show. Managing director Tim Howell said: “It’s absolutely brilliant! It’s always funny to see how people who have never heard of us before react to the name and now that’s happening on a global scale. “For someone who is not familiar with Sandy Balls the ad might seem like a wind-up but we don’t mind if it means getting our product out to a wider audience. “Seeing the video go viral is just incredible and great from a business perspective as it’s not just the name the new audience is seeing, it’s the whole Sandy Balls offering which we’re extremely proud of. “Our unusual name can be traced as far back as the reign of Henry VII. It appeared on maps and other documents of the time as ‘Sandyballas’, which is the description given to the dome-shaped sand and gravel outcrops on our western boundary.” While the Sandy Balls online buzz is relatively new, the holiday centre itself has been around for more than nine decades welcoming tens of thousands of guests during that time to its luxurious 120-estate in the heart of the New Forest National Park.
